Bezel vs pavé setting: what is the difference?
A bezel setting surrounds one diamond with a continuous rim of metal, while a pavé setting covers a surface with many small diamonds held by tiny beads of metal, so it looks paved with light. Bezel is the most protective and smooth to the touch; pavé gives the most sparkle across a wide area. Both are excellent for everyday fine jewelry, they simply suit different designs and lifestyles.
What is a bezel setting?
In a bezel setting, the jeweler shapes a thin wall of gold around the stone and then pushes it over the edge of the diamond, all the way around. The diamond sits inside a small gold frame. Key points:
- Protection: the rim guards the edge of the stone, the part most likely to chip.
- Smooth feel: nothing sticks out to catch on knits, hair or other jewelry.
- Look: a clean, modern outline. Each diamond reads as a small dot of light with a gold border.
- Trade off: a little more metal around the stone means a little less light enters from the sides, so a bezel set stone can look slightly smaller than the same stone in prongs.
The Bezel Set Diamond Tennis Bracelet is a good example: 3 ct total of natural diamonds, each framed in its own 14K yellow or white gold bezel. On a bracelet, which hits desks and doors all day, that protection is exactly what you want.
What is a pavé setting?
Pavé comes from the French word for paved, like a street laid with stones. The jeweler drills rows of small seats into the metal, places a tiny diamond in each one, and raises little beads of metal to hold the stones in place. The result is a surface that sparkles everywhere, with very little metal showing.
- Sparkle: many small facets catching light from every angle.
- Design freedom: pavé can follow curves, hearts and pear shapes that one large stone cannot.
- Care: the stones are small and held by small beads, so a pavé piece should be checked now and then and kept away from hard knocks.
The Pear Diamond Studs show how pavé works on a small scale: pear shaped studs in 18K gold, paved with diamonds, 0.25 ct each and 0.5 ct for the pair. Small enough for every day, bright enough to notice.
On a pendant, pavé can draw a shape in light. The Pave Heart Star of David Diamond Necklace is a pavé diamond heart with a Star of David inside, where the diamonds trace the outline of the heart.
Bezel vs pavé: a side by side comparison
- Number of stones: bezel usually holds one stone per frame; pavé holds many small stones together.
- Sparkle: bezel gives a focused, crisp shine; pavé gives an all over shimmer.
- Durability: bezel is the most protective setting there is; pavé is secure when well made but has more small parts to check.
- Feel: bezel is smooth; pavé is smooth too when finished well, with a slightly textured surface.
- Best for: bezel for active hands, bracelets and minimal style; pavé for curved designs, symbols and maximum light.
Where do prong settings fit in?
Prong settings hold a stone with small metal claws, usually four or six. They show the most of a single diamond and let in the most light, which is why they are classic for solitaire engagement rings. The claws can catch on fabric, though, and need checking over time. Think of the three as a scale: prongs for maximum light on one stone, bezel for maximum protection, pavé for light spread across a surface.
How should you care for bezel and pavé jewelry?
Clean both with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft baby toothbrush, then rinse and pat dry. For pavé, avoid ultrasonic cleaners at home, since strong vibration can loosen very small stones. Have pavé pieces checked by a jeweler once a year. My guide on cleaning gold and diamond jewelry at home has the full routine.
Every setting at Margaret Krinetz Fine Jewelry, handmade in Tel Aviv, is done by hand on pieces made to order. Coming from physics and biology, I love the precision this work asks for: a fraction of a millimeter decides whether a stone sits perfectly or not.
Frequently asked questions
Is bezel or pavé better for everyday wear?
Bezel is the safest choice for very active hands. Well made pavé is also fine for daily wear with a little care.
Do bezel set diamonds look smaller?
Slightly, because the gold rim covers the edge of the stone. Many people like how the frame makes each diamond look crisp and graphic.
Can pavé diamonds fall out?
It is uncommon in well made jewelry, but small stones can loosen after hard knocks. A yearly check keeps pavé secure.
