Best earrings for sensitive ears: a jeweler's guide to solid gold
If your ears itch, turn red or swell a few hours after you put earrings in, the best earrings for you are almost always solid gold, ideally 18K yellow or rose gold, with posts and backs made of the same gold. The reaction most people get from earrings comes from nickel and other base metals hiding under plating or mixed into cheap alloys. Remove those from the part that touches your skin, and most sensitive ears settle down.
Why earrings bother sensitive ears in the first place
Before I became a jeweler I studied physics and biology, and this is one of those places where the biology matters. A pierced earlobe is a small channel of skin that is in contact with metal all day and all night. Warmth and moisture slowly pull tiny amounts of metal out of whatever the post is made of, and the skin absorbs them.
Nickel is the most common troublemaker. It is cheap, strong and shiny, so it shows up in a lot of fashion jewelry, in some plated pieces underneath the gold layer, and in some white gold alloys. Once your skin has reacted to nickel, it tends to react every time it meets it again.
Solid gold vs plated, filled and vermeil
This is the most important distinction, and the labels can be confusing:
- Gold plated means a very thin layer of gold over another metal, often brass or a nickel containing alloy. The layer wears through, sometimes within months, and your skin meets the metal underneath.
- Gold filled and vermeil have a thicker gold layer, over brass or silver. Better, but the base metal is still there, and the post is where wear shows first.
- Solid gold means the gold alloy goes all the way through. There is nothing underneath to be revealed, no matter how long you wear it.
Every piece I make is solid 14K or 18K gold, so there is no layer waiting to wear through.
14K or 18K gold for sensitive ears?
The karat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold. 18K is 75% gold, and 14K is 58.5% gold. The rest is a mix of other metals that give the gold its strength and its color.
For most people with mildly sensitive ears, good quality 14K solid gold is perfectly comfortable. If your ears are very reactive, I usually suggest 18K. With more pure gold in the alloy there is simply less of everything else touching your skin. That is one reason many of my studs are made in 18K, like the Star Light Diamond Studs, which come in 18K yellow, rose or white gold.
A note on white gold
White gold is not a single recipe. Gold is naturally yellow, so white gold is made by mixing it with whiter metals, and depending on the jeweler that can include nickel or palladium. It is usually finished with a bright rhodium layer that can wear thin over time.
If you know you react to nickel, yellow or rose gold is the simplest choice. If your heart is set on white gold, ask the jeweler what the alloy contains before you order. You are always welcome to email us at office@margaretkrinetz.com and ask about the specific piece you have in mind.
Check the posts and backs, not only the front
A beautiful solid gold front on a mystery metal post will still irritate your ear, because the post is the part that sits inside the skin. Before you buy, check that:
- The post and the back are listed in the same solid gold as the earring.
- Hoops and huggies close with a gold hinge or click, with no base metal wire.
- The listing names a karat (14K, 18K) and not only "gold tone" or "gold color."
Styles I suggest for sensitive ears
Small studs for everyday. A small stud is light, sits flat and moves very little, so there is less rubbing in the piercing. You can browse all of mine in the studs collection. The Star Light studs are a favorite here: star shaped diamond studs in 18K gold that catch the light like a clear night.
Huggies instead of large hoops. Heavy hoops pull on the lobe. A huggie stays close to the ear and spreads its weight. The Wide Gold Huggies are 15 mm in diameter and 6 mm wide, made in 14K white, rose or yellow gold, and weigh 2.65 g per earring. If you are sensitive to nickel, the yellow or rose options are the ones I would point you to.
A statement hoop in 18K. When you want something with more presence, choose higher karat gold. The Wavy Diamond Hoop Earrings are made in 18K recycled gold with ethically sourced natural diamonds, a curve of diamonds that follows the line of your ear.
Small habits that help
- Clean posts gently with mild soap and warm water, and dry them well.
- Take earrings out if your ear is already irritated, and let it calm before you try again.
- If a reaction is strong or does not go away, see a dermatologist. A patch test can tell you exactly which metal your skin reacts to, and that makes every future purchase easier.
Wearing earrings again, without thinking about them
If you gave up on earrings years ago, it may never have been your ears. It may have been the metal. Solid gold that touches your skin and nothing else is what lets you put a pair in and forget about it.
Every piece is made to order in my Tel Aviv studio and shipped worldwide with DHL Express, with free shipping on orders over $1,500. If you are not sure which pair or which karat is right for your ears, write to me at office@margaretkrinetz.com and I will help you choose, or start with the studs collection.
