Chai Diamond Necklace in 14K yellow gold, a Hebrew Chai pendant on a paperclip chain by Margaret Krinetz

What does a Chai necklace mean? How to choose one in solid gold

A Chai necklace carries the Hebrew word for life, written with two letters, Chet (ח) and Yud (י). To choose a good one, decide first what you want it to say (a quiet symbol in plain gold, or one that catches light with diamonds), then look at three practical details: the metal, the size of the pendant, and the chain it hangs on. Below I walk you through each one, the way I would if you were sitting across from me at my bench in Tel Aviv.

What does Chai mean?

Chai (חי) means "alive" or "life" in Hebrew. It is the same root you hear in the toast L'chaim, "to life," at weddings, birthdays and every table where people are glad to be together. In Jewish tradition the two letters also add up to the number 18 (Chet is 8, Yud is 10), which is why gifts and donations are often given in multiples of 18. Wearing the word is a way of keeping that wish close: a reminder to choose life, celebrate it and protect it.

I studied biology before I ever sat at a jeweler's bench, and the word still moves me for a very physical reason. Life, from a single cell to a whole person, is the most improbable and beautiful structure I know. Two small letters holding all of that is exactly the kind of idea I love to make in gold.

Plain gold or diamonds?

This is the first real decision, and there is no wrong answer. It depends on how you want to wear it.

Plain solid gold is the most classic version. The letters read clearly from a distance, the surface shows the shape of the Hebrew script, and it sits easily with anything you already own. Our Chai Gold Necklace is made this way: an 8 mm Hebrew Chai pendant in 14K solid gold, on a 2 mm paperclip chain.

Diamond set versions turn the same word into something that catches light every time you move. They feel a little more celebratory, which is why many people choose them for a bat mitzvah, a graduation or a milestone birthday. The Chai Diamond Necklace has the same 8 mm pendant and paperclip chain, with diamonds set into the letters.

If you plan to wear it every single day, both work. Diamonds set into solid gold are made for daily life; just give the piece a gentle clean now and then so the stones keep their sparkle.

Which metal should you choose?

For a Chai pendant I recommend solid gold, not plated or filled. A symbol of life should not fade or rub off after a season. Solid gold keeps its color, does not tarnish, and can be polished back to new after years of wear.

  • 14K gold is my everyday recommendation. It is strong, holds detail beautifully and handles daily wear well. Both of our Chai necklaces are made in 14K, in yellow, white or rose gold.
  • 18K gold has a richer, warmer color because it contains more pure gold. It is a little softer, so it suits someone who wants that deeper glow and treats the piece gently. It is available on request.
  • Platinum is also available on request, for a cool white tone that never needs replating.

Yellow gold is the traditional look for Hebrew lettering. White gold feels modern and pairs well with diamonds. Rose gold is soft and warm on the skin and makes a lovely, slightly unexpected gift.

What size Chai pendant is right?

Size changes the whole personality of the piece. A small pendant around 8 mm, like ours, is delicate: noticeable up close, quiet from across the room, and easy to layer with other necklaces. It is the size I suggest for daily wear and for gifts when you are not sure of someone's style. Larger pendants make a bolder statement and work best worn alone.

A good test: imagine it under a T shirt collar and over a sweater. If you like it in both, you have found your size.

Choosing the chain

The chain matters as much as the pendant. Our Chai necklaces hang on a 2 mm paperclip chain, 16 inches long. Paperclip links are flat and open, so they lie well on the collarbone and give a light, modern line, while still being sturdy enough for everyday wear. Sixteen inches sits just below the base of the neck on most people, close enough that the word stays near your heart. If you would like a different length or chain, every piece can be adjusted when it is made.

Chai as a gift

A Chai necklace is one of the most meaningful gifts in Jewish tradition because the message is so simple: I wish you life. People give it for a bat or bar mitzvah, a new baby, a recovery, a graduation, or simply to someone they love. If you want to add a personal layer, you could pair it with our Hebrew Initial Personalized Compass Necklace in 18K gold, which carries a Hebrew initial of your choice at its center. You can find more meaningful pieces in our Support Israel collection and the full range in Necklaces.
