How to choose a Star of David necklace: a jeweler's guide
To choose a Star of David necklace, decide four things in this order: the design that carries the meaning you want (a classic star, or a star held inside a heart or a butterfly), the gold karat and color that suit your skin and your daily life, whether you want diamonds or plain gold, and the size that fits how you will wear it. Get those four right and the necklace will feel like yours from the first day, not like something you are still getting used to.
I make Star of David pieces in my Tel Aviv studio, and to me the most important question is not about price. It is "which one will I actually wear?" So this guide is built around that question.
Start with the meaning: classic star or a star with a second symbol
The Magen David is two interlocking triangles, six points, one shape that has carried identity, faith and belonging for generations. Some people want exactly that and nothing else. Others want the star to say something more personal.
If you want the symbol in its purest form, a classic pendant is the answer. The Star of David Diamond Pendant is a star set with natural diamonds, made in 18K white, yellow or rose gold. It reads clearly from across a room and quietly up close.
If you want the star paired with a feeling, look at pieces that frame it inside a second symbol. In the Stellar collection, which grew out of my fascination with stars and the scale of the universe, the Stellar Star of David Heart Necklace joins the star with a heart, a reminder to follow your heart's will. The Stellar Star of David Butterfly Necklace adds the butterfly, a symbol of freedom, lightness and growth. Both work beautifully as gifts, because the second symbol lets the giver say why.
Choose the gold: karat first, then color
Karat tells you how much pure gold is in the metal. 18K is 75% gold, so it has a richer, warmer color. 14K is 58.5% gold, which makes it a little harder and a practical choice for a necklace you never take off. Both are solid gold. Neither is plated.
Some designs come in one karat and some in both. The Stellar Heart and Butterfly necklaces are made in 18K gold, and the Butterfly is made in 18K recycled gold. The Pave Heart Star of David Diamond Necklace can be made in 14K or 18K, so you can decide based on how you live.
For color, all of these pieces come in yellow, white or rose gold. A simple way to decide: look at the jewelry you already reach for every morning. If most of it is warm and golden, stay with yellow. If you wear silver tones, white gold will sit naturally next to them. Rose gold is softer and flatters almost every skin tone, and it is a lovely choice when the necklace is a gift and you are not sure.
Diamonds or plain gold
A Star of David is a strong shape on its own, so you do not need stones for it to carry meaning. Diamonds change how the piece behaves in light. A pavé surface, where many small diamonds sit close together, turns the whole outline into a line of light. A single stone gives one bright point, like a star seen on a clear night.
The Pave Heart Star of David necklace uses pavé set diamonds across the heart, with the star inside it. The Stellar Heart necklace is set with a natural diamond. The Butterfly is set with natural conflict free diamonds. If you prefer to keep the focus on the gold shape alone, ask me about a version without stones, since most pieces can be personalized.
Every diamond I set is a natural diamond. If certification matters to you, ask before ordering and I will tell you exactly what is available for the piece you are looking at.
Size and chain: how you will wear it
Think about where the pendant will sit and what it will sit next to. A small pendant sits close to the collarbone and layers easily with other chains. The Butterfly pendant, for example, is 15 mm tall, delicate enough for every day. The Stellar Heart necklace comes on a 16 inch rolo chain, a length that rests just below the base of the neck on most people.
If you plan to layer, choose one piece as the anchor and keep the others simpler. A Star of David pairs beautifully with another meaningful symbol. The Chai Diamond Necklace, the Hebrew word for life set with diamonds in 14K gold on a 16 inch paperclip chain, layers naturally with a star.
Buying it as a gift
If you are choosing for someone else, these are the questions worth answering before you order: what color gold does she already wear, does she layer necklaces or wear one at a time, and is this for a moment (a bat mitzvah, a wedding, a new home, a new chapter) or for everyday? The answers usually point straight to one design.
Every piece is made to order in my studio in Tel Aviv and sent worldwide with DHL Express, with free shipping on orders over $1,500. If you want a different size, a different metal or a personal touch, write to me before ordering and we will work it out together.
