Natural vs Lab Grown Diamonds in 2026: The Science, the Numbers and How to Choose

Natural and lab grown diamonds are physically the same: pure carbon locked in the same cubic crystal, with the same hardness and the same fire. The difference is where and how they formed, how rare they are, and what they cost. In 2026 the majority of engaged couples, in New York and across the US, chose a lab grown center stone, so it is worth understanding both before you decide.

How does a natural diamond form?

Natural diamonds formed deep in the Earth's mantle, under huge pressure and heat, over very long geological time. Volcanic eruptions carried them up in rock called kimberlite, where they are mined today. Each one carries tiny traces of its journey: inclusions, growth patterns and trace elements that gemologists can read like a fingerprint.

How is a lab grown diamond made?

Laboratories reproduce the same physics in two main ways:

  • HPHT, high pressure and high temperature, imitates the mantle with a press.
  • CVD, chemical vapor deposition, grows diamond layer by layer from a carbon rich gas on a small diamond seed.

The result is real diamond, not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. Telling a lab grown stone from a natural one requires laboratory instruments, which is why a grading report from a lab such as GIA or IGI matters for either kind.

What do the 2026 numbers say?

Rapaport, reporting on The Knot's study released in February 2026 and based on more than 10,000 couples married in 2025, found that 61% chose a lab grown center stone, a 239% increase since 2020. The share first passed 50% in 2024. The average lab grown center stone was about 2 carats, for an average ring spend of $4,300, while natural center stones averaged about 1.6 carats and $7,000.

In other words: lab grown buys more size for less money, and natural buys rarity and geological history.

How do I choose between them?

  • Choose natural if the story of a stone formed by the Earth itself matters to you, or if you think of the piece as something to pass on.
  • Choose lab grown if you want a larger stone within a set budget and the origin story matters less to you.
  • Either way, ask for a grading report, look at the actual stone, and judge cut quality first, because cut is what makes a diamond come alive.

What do I use in my own designs?

The Wavy pieces are made in 18K recycled gold with ethically sourced natural diamonds. The Wavy Bow Diamond Hoops, for example, carry approximately 1.85 ct of natural earth mined diamonds, and the Wavy Diamond Hoop Earrings curve a line of natural diamonds around the ear. Frequently asked questions

Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They have the same chemistry and crystal structure as natural diamonds. Simulants like cubic zirconia are different materials.

Can you see the difference?

Not with the naked eye. Gemological labs use specialized instruments to identify origin.

How long does delivery to New York take?

Every piece is made to order in 4 to 6 weeks, then ships with DHL Express in 3 to 5 business days. Shipping is free on orders over $1,500.
