Diamond Color Science: Why Diamonds Are Yellow, Blue, Pink or Black

Diamonds get their color from tiny changes in their carbon crystal: a few atoms of nitrogen turn a diamond yellow, boron turns it blue, and distortions in the crystal lattice are linked to pinks and browns. A perfectly pure, perfect diamond would be colorless. Whether you are shopping in New York or anywhere else, understanding this science makes the color grade on a certificate much easier to read.

What is a diamond made of, and why should it be colorless?

A diamond is carbon and almost nothing else. Each carbon atom is bonded to four neighbors in a rigid, repeating three dimensional pattern. In a flawless lattice, nothing in that structure absorbs visible light, so white light passes through and comes back out as white light. That is why the most prized "white" diamonds are, in scientific terms, the purest ones.

Nature is rarely flawless. As diamonds grow deep in the Earth, other atoms slip into the lattice, and the crystal can be squeezed and bent by geological forces. Each of these small imperfections absorbs a slice of the light spectrum, and the color we see is what remains.

Why are most diamonds slightly yellow? The role of nitrogen

Nitrogen is the most common impurity in natural diamonds. Its atoms are close in size to carbon, so they can replace carbon in the lattice. Depending on how the nitrogen atoms are arranged, they absorb part of the blue end of the spectrum, and a diamond that absorbs blue looks faintly yellow to our eyes.

This is why the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades most diamonds on its D to Z color scale. D means colorless, and each letter after it shows a little more yellow or brown, until Z. Graders compare each stone face down against master stones under controlled light, because the differences between neighboring grades are very subtle.

Our Diamond Studs are a good example of why certification matters: each pair holds 1.5 ct total of natural diamonds, and the stones are GIA certified, so the color grade is measured rather than guessed.

What makes a diamond blue? Boron

When boron atoms replace some of the carbon, the diamond absorbs red and yellow light and appears blue. Boron also changes how the crystal behaves electrically: blue boron diamonds are semiconductors, while most diamonds are electrical insulators. Gemologists call this group type IIb.

The most famous example is the Hope Diamond in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, a deep blue stone colored by boron. Blue diamonds of any size are extremely rare in nature, which is part of why they draw so much attention.

Why are some diamonds pink, brown or green?

Not every color comes from an extra element. Some come from the crystal itself being deformed.

  • Pink and red: associated with plastic deformation, when intense pressure in the Earth bends the lattice without breaking it. GIA researchers have studied the crystal structure of pink diamonds closely, and the exact mechanism is still an active research question.
  • Brown: also linked to deformation of the lattice, and the most common fancy color.
  • Green: caused by natural radiation over very long periods, which knocks carbon atoms out of place.
  • Black: usually not one color center at all, but a crowd of dark inclusions, such as graphite, that absorb most of the light.

Once color is strong enough, a diamond leaves the D to Z scale and becomes a "fancy color" diamond, graded by hue and intensity instead.

Black diamonds: color you can wear with intention

Black diamonds behave very differently from colorless ones. Instead of returning light from inside, they show a glossy surface luster, almost like polished metal. Set along a curve, that dark shine creates contrast against gold.

The Wavy Black Diamond Bangle For Him sets ethically sourced natural black diamonds along a wave of 18K recycled gold, part of the Wavy collection, where the sine and cosine waves from Margaret's physics background become gold.

Do lab grown diamonds have color too?

Yes, because the same physics applies. Lab grown diamonds are real carbon crystals, and the atoms present during growth affect their color just as they do underground. Growers control the chemistry to aim for colorless stones or deliberately add elements for color. Gemologists use spectroscopy to study these color centers, which is one of the ways labs distinguish grown stones from natural ones. Our guide to natural vs lab grown diamonds goes deeper into that comparison.

How should color guide your choice of gold?

The metal around a diamond changes how you perceive its color. Yellow gold reflects warm light into the stone, which makes a hint of warmth less noticeable. White gold and platinum frame the stone in cool tones and make a very colorless diamond look icier. In pavé, like the approx. 1.85 ct of natural diamonds on the Wavy Bow Diamond Hoops in 18K recycled gold, many small stones work together, so a consistent color across all of them matters more than any single grade.

Frequently asked questions

Is a D color diamond always the best choice?

Not necessarily. Grades near D are the rarest, but many people cannot see the difference between neighboring grades once a stone is set, especially in yellow gold.

Are black diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Natural black diamonds are carbon crystals whose color comes mostly from many dark inclusions.

How long does delivery to New York take?

Each piece is handmade to order in 4 to 6 weeks, then ships by DHL Express in 3 to 5 business days. Shipping is free on orders over $1,500.
